Happy Memorial Day! Here in
Newport, Rhode Island, ‘Operation Stand Down Rhode Island’ will pay tribute to
American service members killed in action in the global war on terrorism with a
Boots on the Ground for Heroes Memorial on Memorial Day weekend, May 24-May 27,
at Fort Adams State Park.
In 2016, Operation Stand Down Rhode Island
launched the memorial display of nearly 7,000 military boots, each adorned with
a name placard and an American flag, honoring service members killed since the
Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. This will be its first time on display in
Newport. The exhibit is free to attend.
The 88th Rhode Island Army National Guard
Band will perform a concert on Sunday starting at 7 p.m.
The organization,
which has an office on Broadway, provides a food pantry, job placement
assistance and legal help for veterans. Its mission is helping “homeless and
at-risk veterans secure stable housing.”
