Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny Celebrate Their Congregational Feast Day

Anne-Marie Javouhey was born in France on November 11, 1779. In 1807, she founded the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny who dedicated themselves to the care of the sick and to teaching. She wrote, "...There is so much resourcefulness in children. It is on them that I count if God wishes to use us for such a great apostolate..." Called to minister to the colonies, Anne_Marie devoted herself to the emancipation of the slaves. She died July 15, 1851

PRAYER:

O God, we thank you for the life of Blessed Anne-Marie Javouhey and for the apostolic work continues by her followers, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny. May they be faithful to her spirit in their service to the young, the poor, the sick, and the mentally afflicted. We ask this in the name of Jesus whose gospel she so faithfully followed. Amen.

HAPPY FEAST DAY, CLUNY SISTERS!

June 2013 Stop Trafficking! Newsletter

June's issue explores sexual exploitation driven by ‘demand' and strategies for reducing the demand. The market for prostitution relies on the demand, so targeting the demand will help to eliminate the market for prostitution, thus helping to eliminate this aspect of human trafficking.

Sister Mary Elizabeth Arrives in the US for the 2013 Mission Appeals

Sister Mary Elizabeth John visits the US for the first time for the 2013 Mission Appeal.  Sr. Mary Elizabeth, is a Sierra Leonean nurse, working in Moyamba.  She is responsible for our epilepsy management program in the Moyamba District.  Mary Elizabeth has also had experience working in the Diocesan Mobile Health Team in The Gambia, and for three years she was missioned to Ireland, assisting in the nursing home at Mt. Sackville.

It was a long journey from Africa and she was exhausted by the time she arrived. Sister's luggage, however, did not make the journey with her, but the good news is, it was delivered before she had to visit her first parish for the appeal! We will be enjoying her company at the Provincial House in Middletown, RI for the next two months.

WELCOME, SISTER MARY ELIZABETH!

Sr. Maria's Golden Jubilee

On March 19, 2013 Sr. Maria Rocha celebrated her Golden Jubilee as a Sister of St. Joseph of Cluny.

"Fifty years after my profession, I am filled with great gratitude for the gift of my vocation. Over the years, I have gained the courage to say ‘yes’ more completely every day in order to follow Jesus without reserve. I offer a heartfelt thanks to all who have journeyed with me, especially my parents. I am grateful for the nurture and support along the way through joyful times and days of struggle. Every day in my diverse ministries in three countries on three continents brought new growth and blessings. What a privilege it has been to share in the mission of Jesus! Gracious God! In the days remaining, teach me true compassion that I may learn to love as you love us!
Amen."

Congratulations Sister Maria!

Pope Francis

Cluny Sisters welcome Francis as the new pope, the first from Latin America. Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina is described as "a holy and prayerful man, devoted to the poor..." We pray for the Holy Father...

THE PRAYER OF ST. FRANCIS
Lord, make me a channel of thy peace,
that where there is hatred, I may bring love;
that where there is wrong, I may bring the spirit of forgiveness;
that where there is discord, I may bring harmony;
that where there is error, I may bring truth;
that where there is doubt, I may bring faith;
that where there is despair, I may bring hope;
that where there are shadows, I may bring light;
that where there is sadness, I may bring joy.
Lord, grant that I may seek rather to comfort than to be comforted;
to understand, than to be understood;
to love, than to be loved.
For it is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.
It is by dying that one awakens to Eternal Life.

New School for Cameroon

The Cluny Sisters are pleased to announce the granting of $10,000.00 from The Dorothea Haus Ross Foundation to construct a small nursery school and kindergarten in Kaigama, Cameroon.
Sister Therese

In 2007, Sister Therese Beudin, SJC began a farm project to teach young people, with precious few opportunities, how to work the land and teach girls how to process the soybeans and cocoa grown on the farm. The goal is for these young people to become independent and autonomous. Today, the farm is working well and attracting more and more young single mothers with many children in need of care and education. Sister Therese is keeping alive the Cluny mission "to do a little good" wherever they find a need.

A Message and Prayer from Cluny Sisters in India

This story and message was taken from the Cluny Newsletter in Kancharapara (located in West Bengal, India). For many, the story is familiar; for all, the message and prayer serves us well in this Year of Faith:

THE CONCEALED DOOR

“There are people whose presence is encouraging….
The sense of encouragement you feel from them is not simply their words or gestures;
It is rather their whole presence enfolding you
And helping you find the concealed door”  - John O’Donohue

In THE SECERET GARDEN, a hope-filled story, a ten year old orphan Mary is sent to live with her reclusive uncle in the desolate Yorkshire moors.  As she goes about her daily exploration, she finds a high-walled garden.  Mary longs to get inside that garden but she cannot find the entrance into it.  The walls are covered with thick, dangling vines due to years of neglect, and they hide the wooden gate.  Day after day Mary goes back to the garden, bringing with her a constant yearning to find a way inside.

One sunny day, a chirping robin flits from the top of the garden wall to the ground beside her. Mary looks down to where the bird has landed and sees the top of a buried key.  (May the Holy Spirit help us find the key to our heart, that beautiful but neglected garden). Not long after she digs the rusty key out, Mary discovers the concealed gate.  Her heart beats wildly as she turns the corroded key in the lock.  One strong turn, a bit of grunting effort to push the long unused gate open, and Mary is finally able to walk into the abandoned garden.  Eventually, with the assistance of some newly found friends, Mary restores the place to its natural beauty. (Let us help each other in discovering our inner beauty and the presence of the One we love.)

In many ways our hidden self is like the secret garden Mary found.  We have this realm of beauty and potential growth within us, but we do not always believe in it or know how to reach it.  When we do find our way to our true self, there is work to be done in order to resurrect or restore our innate goodness.

Like Mary’s robin and the friends who assisted her, we, too, have helpers in our life who, knowingly or unknowingly, aid us in our search for the concealed door to our inner garden.  Who are these companions of growth?  These are people who believe in me before I believe in myself.  These companions challenge me to see the parts of my self that were encumbered by my ego.  They give me courage to seek and find the veiled realm of my authentic self.

To sum up, others can help us open the door of our heart.  We need them to teach us how to pray, to encourage us to find and use our personal talents, to challenge us to expand our minds and hearts.
Prayer

Trusted Gardener, tame what has grown too wild.  Free what has become too tame. Claim what has been neglected. Awaken what has been dormant.  Thank you for the companions whose presence lead me to my deeper self. I open the door of my heart to you. Amen

Remembering Sister Brigid Costelloe, SJC

Sister Brigid Costelloe passed peacefully to God December 11, 2012 at Jeanne Jugan Residence, San Pedro, California.  Brigid was born in Cork, Ireland, October 18, 1927 into a family of strong traditional and religious values.  She was the fourth of five children. Sister Brigid entered St. Joseph of Cluny novitiate in Ireland, September 1947.  Her first assignment was to Philadelphia and then on to Wilmington, CA where she joined the faculty of Ss. Peter and Paul School.  She subsequently devoted many years to classroom education at St. Catherine Laboure School, Torrance, CA and Cluny School, Newport, RI. Sister Brigid also served various parishes in Los Angeles and Orange Counties, including the Spirituality Center in Orange, CA in the areas of RCIA, adult religious education and spiritual direction.

For the last six years of Sister Brigid’s life she benefited from the loving and excellent care of the Little Sisters of the Poor and the staff of Jeanne Jugan Residence, San Pedro, CA. She will be sadly missed by her Cluny Sisters, many nieces and nephews in San Diego and Ireland, and her numerous friends. The Mass of Resurrection was celebrated at the Jeanne Jugan Residence Chapel, San Pedro. Burial followed at All Souls Cemetery, Long Beach, CA. May Sister Brigid, after her many years of devoted service in building the Lord’s Kingdom, now rest in peace.

Province Welcomes New Provincial

Today, November 11, 2012, the Province of USA & Canada welcomed Sister Luke Parker as our newly appointed Provincial.  Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Sister Luke entered the community in 1964 and spent many years in education in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada and Torrance, California.  During the last nine years Sister Luke served as Vice Provincial of the Province.

November 11th is a significant day in the Congregation celebrating one of our Patrons, Saint Martin of Tours and the baptism day of our Foundress, Blessed Anne Marie Javouhey.

Sister Luke follows Sister Joan Van der Zyden who has served the Province as Provincial since November, 2003.  We are grateful to Sister Joan for her leadership of the Province and hold her in prayer as she now transitions to her new role as General Councilor of the Congregation.

Let Us Pray ... Hurricane Sandy

As we continue to be aware of the devastation left behind by Hurricane Sandy, let us join together in praying for all those affected by this tragedy. We pray especially for the families who have lost love ones and for those who have lost their homes. May they find strength in their God and support in the many thousands of people who are working so hard to assist those who are in most need.
